I live in central Texas with my hubby and some critters. I've been reading about beekeeping for a couple years and I think I am ready to be a good bee mommy. We have 165acres but I'm still not sure where to put the hive. I plan on collecting equipment this winter, order some bees and start in spring. I will be visiting beesource this winter to learn as much as I can from yall.

Hello and Welcome!
This is a great forum for learning more about bees and beekeeping. Be sure to check out the "How to Start Beekeeping" subforum for some good tips. Also check out local beekeeping clubs. Clubs often offer beginning beekeeping classes and are good places to find mentors and get connected with nearby beekeepers: http://www.texasbeekeepers.org/clubs/ |

Hello Tecumseh, it seems I'm about 2hrs away from any place important. Been out here in the toolies for 2yrs now building a house (still doin it). Its nice to be so far away from the rat race most of the time but when you want to get together with clubs or things like that its the pits. Looks like the closest club is in Hewitt but not sure how active they are. Gotta look into it. I bet College Station has lots going on with bees since the college is there. Might have to make it down if it looks like yall are the closest biggest thing going in bees.

Hey Norton101, thanks for the East Texas welcome and offer for help. I have tons of questions but with all the reading and looking online its starting to make some kind of sense. Right now I'm thinking about starting with a TBH but not 100 sure yet. Maybe one plus one conventional style. I'm hoping to maybe find a local mentor that's not 100 miles away. Haven't found anyone yet close enough to do that. May have to wing it.

it seems I'm about 2hrs away tecumseh: well just around the block by Texas standards. do come down and visit anytime. bring husband and kids.... there is plenty of room to roam here along the banks of the Brazos. I am pretty much a minimalist/old school beekeeper so don't expect much. anyway it is always an honor to show folks about here... what little there is to show. I think there is a beekeeper in Franklin (or was). The state bee lab/apairy inspection service (they are soon to get a new facility... same general location) at the A&M annex is a good resource, most especially if you have any concerns in regards to africanized bee stock. There is very little in regards to bee club activity here in College Station... it seems the club here has been inactive for 10+ years. My wife and I attend the bee club meeting in Brenham (fairly new but quite active)... where I am the vp (best office in the world since you are responsible for nothing) and sometime the primary entertainment. My wife and I do like the folks in Brenham.
